Mascaras Tips and Faves!

Harou there!

As the title suggests, I'm gonna be blogging about my favourite mascaras!
On top of that, I'll also be giving tips on applying mascara~ So keep on reading~

Just a lil bit on my eyelash background check, I have quite long but very thin and sparse lashes. My upper lashes are really stubborn and it is almost mission impossible to get them to stay curled for long no matter what method I use, they look pretty for a maximum of 2 hours and they just go back to sleep -_-.
My lower lashes on the other hand just needs some volumising and a bit of lengthening, not much of a problem there.

I started using mascaras when I was about 14 and stopped using it as a main dish for my eye make when I was about 16 when falsies was introduced to me.

I apply mascara on my top lashes for only 1 main reason, to blend my natural lash with my falsies.
Whereas I apply mascara to my bottom lashes more often; same as the above reason and also when I put on very natural top falsies, I usually just swipe on mascara to balance instead of applying bottom falsies which could make me look like a sad panda/ puppy.

So I'm gonna cut the talk here and go on to the products that I use for my different lash make routine!

1. Top Falsies + Bottom Falsies (to blend natural lash)

Top Lashes + Bottom Lashes

Lash Sculpture Long Separate Mascara

This is by far my favourite mascara, it is build-able, separates my lashes nicely and not clumpy. Plus it is one of the rare mascaras that can actually hold my top lashes for a slightly longer period of time.
With just 1 coat, it looks like you have naturally dark and long lashes.

Where to get it: Watsons (Singapore) / Watsons (Singapore) / Online (Sasa website / Taiwan & Japan Websites)

 2. Top Falsies only (full mascara applied on bottom lashes)

Top Lashes (to blend natural lashes with falsies)

Lash Sculpture Long Separate Mascara
(To blend top lashes with falsies)

Bottom Lashes
Maybelline Lash Stiletto Mascara
Lengthening - 1st Step
Maybelline Lash Stiletto Mascara
Maybelline produces the best drugstore mascaras in my opinion. I will show you a couple more that I've used grown to like them and still use them occasionally later on in this post. The Maybelline Lash Stiletto Mascara lengthens my lashes like no one's business.

I compared the Lash King Mascara from Majolica and also a few other mascaras that claims to lengthen lashes, none were as good as the lash stiletto. Most of the lengthening mascaras usually has fibres in them and I'm not too sure if I'm the only one but all of them except the lash stiletto gave me fibre dropouts. Which can be quite irritating.

This mascara is very buildable as well but for me, 2 coats is more then enough for my bottom lashes. 3 will be the maximum.

Where to get it: Watsons (Singapore) / Boots (Overseas/ US) / Major Pharmacies that sells cosmetics / Online

Shu Uemura Ultimate Expression Mascara
Volumising - 2nd Step

Shu Uemura Ultimate Expression Mascara

This was a gift from a friend and I am so glad I got to know of this product. Never in my years of applying makeup did I ever think of investing and buying a "branded" mascara *reasons above in this blogpost*. But I was so glad I was given a chance to try this out and it has been on my favourites list ever since.

The Ultimate Expression Mascara from Shu Uemura is a mascara with a drier formula as compared to some other mascaras out in the market which works great for people like me who has thin and sparse lashes, it won't weigh your lashes down if applied correctly. This mascara also, surprisingly holds my curls better, maybe because of its dry formula.

Here's a couple of photos I grabbed from my Instagram (@ golly_locks) with me in top falsies + mascara on the bottom

*Refer to No. 3 below on the steps I use to apply mascara for my bottom lashes*

Where to get it: Shu Uemura Counters / Stores

3. No Falsies (just mascara to both top and bottom lashes)
Not very often will I do this *because I'm quite lazy =X* but since some of you might do this often instead of wearing falsies like me I shall just type a small paragraph on how I do it, the products used are stated in No. 2 above.

Top Lashes
Step 1: Curl my lashes with a heated metal clamp eyelash curler (Shu Uemura) with a hair dryer/ lighter. *Careful not to burn your eyes, let it cool down a lil first*

Step 2: Apply 1 thin coat of the Lash Sculpture Long Separate Mascara and use an electronic eyelash curler (Panasonic) to curl my lashes again after the mascara has dried.

Step 3: Apply 2 coats of the Maybelline Lash Stiletto Mascara.

Step 4: Apply 2-3 coats of the Shu Uemura Ultimate Expression Mascara.

Step 5: After all coats of mascara has dried, use the electronic eyelash curler to curler for the last time.

Bottom Lashes

Step 1: Curl bottom lashes downwards with an electronic eyelash curler to separate lashes.

Step 2: Apply 2 coats of the Maybelline Lash Stiletto Mascara.

Step 3: Apply 2 coats of the Shu Uemura Ultimate Expression Mascara.

Step 4: After all coats of mascara has dried, use the electronic eyelash curler to curler for the last time.

Pointers/ Tips:

- Let each coat of mascara dry before applying the next/ curling

- Always remove excess mascara from the brush before applying each coat.

- Build many layers of mascara instead of applying a ton of them at one go to avoid clumps.

- By curling your eyelashes before and after applying mascara, it helps to keep your curls for a longer period of time.

- Use a mascara base before applying any mascaras if you do this very often, it helps to protect your natural lashes.

I am also gonna show you some of my "past" favourites *cosmetics are advancing as quickly as Apple releasing newer versions of Iphones ya know* I still use them once in a while~ Hehe~ They are some other alternatives that you can try using too~

Lengthening Mascaras

Maybelline Volum Express Hypercurl,
Hello Kitty Edition Mascara

Majolica Majorca Lash Beautifying Frame Plus
Volumising Mascaras

Maybelline Volum Express MAGNUM Mascara

Majolica Majorca Lash Enamel Glamour Volume Mascara

I hope this post was useful for you!
I'll see you in the next post ok!!

Nikon 1 J2 in Pink, Camera Barbie with a Phd

 Yoho! Everyone!

I'm gonna do a tech-y post today!

I don't usually blog about tech-y stuff but I came across this campaign that Nuffnang was holding and I knew I had to do this!

It is about the new Nikon 1 J2!

Another reason why I decided to do this post was because one of the criteria for this entry was to show how the Nikon 1 J2 can match my fashion outfits!

In simpler terms, it's NIKON X FASHION!

I'm not a very tech savvy person but I really love taking photos, be it portrait photos, self cam etc~
So don't expect any pro explanations of the specs of this camera in this post eh~
You can check out the full specs if you really must know HERE  1

First of all, I am supposed to be choosing 1 color out of the 6, in which I had been struggling to choose between the white or the pink...

I already have a black camera currently so black is definitely out for me. The white attracted me cos it looks oh-so-classy~ But after much thinking.. I decided to go for the PINK ONE!

So, before I go on to why I chose the pink one, Here are some other reasons why I want this camera so much aside from the super adorable pink they have!

1. High Speed Auto-Focus

I love taking candid shots of people and it can be really annoying when EVERY SINGLE PHOTO you took comes out blur, for example... blurred out face *that looks freaking scary btw*, blurred out leg that looks like shadow kicks etc~

All my photos will probably turn out clear and crisp with this high speed AF. =D

2. Smart Photo Selector

When taking self portrait shots/ photos at a fashion show, I always end up having to go through hundreds and hundreds of photos, some blurry, some of which I blinked, models on the runway having spastic expressions etc..

Ok, let's just say after I think I've got my shots, I still have to go through the hassle of deleting those that turned out bad.

This Smart Photo Selector feature saves you all these trouble.

The moment you half press the shutter to focus, it temporarily takes 20 photos before and after the actual shot you take and chooses 1 best shot and 4 reserve shots.
Those blurred, out-of-frame and photos where people had blinked will be detected and deleted!

1 click = 5 good shots. =D

Double Awesome.

3. Motion Snapshot

This is one super cool feature! The motion Snapshot mode will allow you to record 1 second of movie and a still picture. When played, the movie is shown in slow motion at 2.5 seconds while the still picture is played continuously.

Your picture instantly comes alive!

Here's one example taken from Nikon's Website:

The video shown in the link was taken using "Motion Snapshot" mode, then converted to flash video format for ease of handling. Image quality varies from the original.

4. HD Movie Shooting + Image Capture

Basically, this is a great feature for me personally. I do makeup/ hair tutorials that I upload on Youtube. But I believe there are some of my readers who prefer to see a pictorial version or maybe both to be clearer about what the steps are.
And that will take me double the time to do both since my current camera doesn't have a feature like this. ='(

So while taking a Full HD Video, I'll be able to press the shutter release button to capture an image while recording without any disruptions!!

I think you will probably see more tutorials uploaded if I really were to get my hands on this baby!

5. Creativity is Boundless!

I simply love cameras with different effects I can use to capture my images! With different lighting + different effects, I don't even need to waste time to adjust the lightings of my photos or apply effects using my computer any more and I'll have pretty photos already.

6. Super lightweight + cute!

Besides taking portrait/ product photos at home, I usually have to bring my camera out if there's an event I need to attend.

I've always wanted to bring a clutch and act all glam but with my current camera, I can't do that cos my camera won't fit in ANY of my clutches! T^T I always end up having to carry a huge bag. =(

I do have other smaller digital cams at home that I can bring out but I refuse to because the quality of the photos just turns out..... SHITTY.

But look at the Nikon 1 J2!! So compact yet able to take good quality photos!

And also it is super cute!!!!! I love how the in-built flash pops up like a Gary's eye *Gary is Spongebob SquarePant's pet snail* !!!

And here's a super cute video of a commercial by Nikon Korea featuring Sandara from 2NE1 with the pink Nikon 1 J2!
Fans of Dara/ 2NE1, tempted to get this cam yet??~ =P

Nikon X Fashion

Above 3 pictures is almost enough to explain why I chose this color yet?

I mean, look at it! It's PINK!!

I might not be the girliest girl but this pink is so adorable.
Although I always wear black, white, dark colors, I do get excited too when I see pink alright~

And because I wear Black/ white so often, I usually have to make use of colorful accessories to make my outfit stand out. Black/ white outfits can sometimes make me look intimidating/ boring/ I don't want to make friends with you kinda first impressions when I'm totally not that!

But I am sure, with a Pink Nikon 1 J2, I'll be able to stand out when I whip out this pretty camera, make myself more approachable *er hmm even if I don't get this camera, I am still very approachable so be friends with me ok? =D *

I'm not the only one who will be able to stand out with the Pink Nikon 1 J2,

Go check out the link below today to see how YOU can stand out with the new Nikon 1 J2!~~

Travel: Bangkok - January 2013

Finally, another travel post~

Why, hello again everyone!
I've been a "good" blogger so far (for these 2 weeks) am I? =D

As you all know, I went for a "short" trip to Bangkok aka BKK in January this year~
I'm here today to share with you my experience!

Many have been asking me why I would I want to go to BKK for such a long time.
I went for about 6 days 5 nights btw~

The last time I went was in 2012 March after a gap of like what? 10 years? I went for the same amount of time, 6 days 5 nights and it wasn't even enough for me!
So I decided I will need either the same or more time there.

I only took pictures on the first day I arrived there and after that, my camera was mostly left lying in the hotel. XD I just couldn't find the time to whip out my camera to take pictures or camwhore.
And to be honest, I was in make up only for the first day. Whahaha!!

The last time I went in March last year, I went with my bestie, and boy I tell you the weather was hot as hell and even though I am not one who throws my temper easily, I was kinda frustrated I threw a small lil tantrum at her for no reason XD Sorry bestie~ Wahahah!!

The best time to head there is definitely in January! The weather is just nice with no humid rains~

We flew there on Jetstar this time and came back by AirAsia which was quite a bad choice actually.
I'd probably not take AirAsia ever again, maybe not ever again but at least not until they do something to their service.

Even though it was cheaper, but the airport for departure was at the old bangkok airport, Don Mueang Airport which is not as convenient as the new airport. Plus, if you are someone who needs to clarify questions before you fly, better not take AirAsia. You have to GO DOWN TO FREAKING CHANGI AIRPORT to have your questions answered if you're not their VIP member. puuuu~~

Sorry AirAsia, but you gotta step up on that before I decide to use you again~

Yep, that's my bestie (left) and me on the express train without make up, fresh out from the airport XD

This time, unlike the previous trip, we decided to take a train instead of a cab as we feared jams since we arrived on a weekday morning which might be the peak period for people working office hours in BKK.

The train was clean and nice and it took us about 45 mins or so to reach the nearest station *I can't remember what station* before we got a cab to our hotel. - Bad travel blogger much =P

By the time we reached and checked in, it was about 12pm and it was time for lunch!

We went to Greyhound Cafe located at The Emporium which was highly recommended by some other bloggers for our first meal in BKK!

Here are some of the recommended dishes that we tried~

Prawn Bisque with Fresh Cream - 130 baht
This soup is super awesome! You've got to try it when you head there!
It is full of flavour and not the kind where you can literally taste the MSG in it. I doubt there is any since I didn't really feel very thirsty after that. It was so good we went back the next day just to have it again~ XD

Salmon Sashimi in Spicy Hot Sauce - 190 baht
An appetizer that is well.. not bad I would say but nothing fantastic.
The sauce is really spicy and special though~

Greyhound Famous Fried Chicken Wings - 110 baht
I love the Thais for being so considerate really. The wings that you see above, they have already pre-split them so you don't even have to bite the joints to break them up into 2. If you get what I mean. =D
Taste wise, definitely something different from what you usually have in Singapore. The marination is probably different I guess.

Complicated Noodle - 150 baht
They are not that complicated actually, despite the name.
This was one of the dishes that was highly recommended. You are supposed to wrap the noodle sheet, minced pork and spicy sauce with a piece of lettuce and eat it with poise like the ladies in Thailand... NOT! I was a whole big mess when eating this, with sauce dripping and all. But I can't deny, although I like sinful food, this healthy dish got me hooked~

Thai Tea Granita - Price forgotten =X
Blended version of the Thai Iced Tea. Super duper sweet and definitely not a thirst quencher.
I very much prefer those sold at the road sides. =D

After having a fufilling lunch, we headed back to our hotel to smack on some makeup before heading out again. Our plan was to visit the Madame Tussauds wax museum first before going for any shopping.

Us in our hotel toilet, duh.
And probably the only time you'd see me in 2 pony tails is
when I'm on a vacation to BKK.

We took a cab to the Siam Discovery Centre , you can purchase your tickets before your trip there where you might be able to get certain discounts.

Address: Madame Tussauds Bangkok
6th Floor Siam Discovery, 989 Rama 1 Rd, Pathumwan, Bangkok 10330

I'm not gonna be posting up all the photos I took at the wax museum, don't worry. You're probably quite sick of my face now eh~ T^T
I chose some that I really like to be posted below and the rest in a gif image~

With David Beckham, doing his crunches XD

Mr Bruce Lee in his famous bumble bee jumpsuit.
And me breaking concrete cement bricks in half.
Like real.

Winning my first award with Jacky Chan, by my side.

Love how they placed props like these for visitors
to strong for once. Wahahaha!!

I really enjoyed the experience at the wax museum! Although I did get a scare or two because the figurines looked so real! I mistook a real person as a figurine and gave myself a scare when he moved~ XD

After that, we just roamed around Siam area where there are lotsa roadside stores selling food and cheap clothes~ We just ate non-stop before we headed to this small mall *I can't remember the name again -_-* near the Chatuchak Weekend Market to do some shopping!

And this was what happened after that.........

FOL.. It was only our first day... -_-

After shopping and having our dinner, that concluded our first day as we needed to wake up early the next day to head to the weekend market early.

Here's a breakdown of where we visited and what we did:

Chatuchak Weekend Market
Mall near CTC weekend market
Platinum Mall
Central World - Naraya & Zen
Terminal 21

Seafood at TNK Chinatown
Roadside stores
Pig Trotters at MBK Food Court (plus 5 stars for this)
Bar-B-Q at MBK
Seafood Grill at roadside store beside Central World (Go for the first one beside the road~)
Urban Retreat - There are 2 outlets, the one at Asoke is more poshy looking I feel

And to end this post!! CAMHO PHOTOS OF ME AND BESTIE AND MYSELF AGAIN!! WAHAHHAHA!! Please don't get sick of my face ok.. Pretty please~ ^3^

Can't waste the effort we put in to do our makeup when we could have been using the time to shop right~~ I really love the cap~ Gonna have it stolen from my brother again very soon~ And if you still dunno why I'm so in love with caps~

Picture above was taken randomly on a bridge around Central World. The bestie said she liked the blue lights so we decided to make it our background~ XD

And a couple of me!!

Makeup I did on the first day was pretty simple actually, since I didn't want to bring too many makeup products overseas.

Kanebo Fr├ęshel White C BB Cream - doubled up as concealer for spots
Kate Under Eye Concealer
Kate Loose Powder
Etude House Lip & Cheek Tint
Diamond Beauty - No. 1 Princess Nose palette
Dolly Wink Eyebrow Pencil - No. 1 Honey Brown
Eye Make
Double Eyelid Tape - Nudy, Slim (Donki)

Eyeliner - Clio Pen Liner (Black)
Top Lashes - Dolly Wink No. 17 Diamond Dolly
Bottom Lashes - Dolly Wink No. 14 Natural Cute
Etude House Lip & Cheek Tint

I.Fairy Lumos - Pink

I really love BKK and their people! They are all such happy people, it makes me happy too!
And thanks to Nutchii and a couple of the sweetest girls from Thailand who Instagram commented and Lined me to update me on what was going onand gave some tips and help!~ There was a fashion show which I had to give a miss because I was with my bestie. =( Next time maybe? =D

I'll see you soon in my next post alright?!
And in the mean time if you have any questions you want ask about my trip/ if you want any details, just leave a comment down below/ send me an email gollylocks@gmail.com and I'll try my best to help you!

Bai Bai!!
